My boys love oatmeal, especially the toddler, baby b. Not the instant stuff, but real old fashioned oats cooked on the stove with a little cinnamon and grated apple. (If you’re cooking for more than one, it really doesn’t take much longer to cook the real stuff and it tastes so much better!)
Recently I stumbled on the perfect way to cool it off––frozen blueberries. Baby b. loves to snack on frozen blueberries, so I threw some into his hot oatmeal. It cools it off, adds great nutrition, and he loves stirring the berries around to make his oatmeal purple.
Frozen blueberries. The perfect oatmeal cooling device. Works for me! Check out Rocks in my Dryer for more great tips!

Great idea! I've resorted to ice cubes before, but it never dawned on me to try frozen fruit.
My kids eat a lot of oatmeal too, but I usually just throw raisins and brown sugar in. I think I will try this though, to sneak in some extra fruit...
Cool! (pun intended) I usually stick the whole bowl in the freezer but that works too.
Now, who is going to mail me some real blueberries b/c the ones we have around here aren't worth buying even when they are "in" season?
If you have a Trader Joes nearby, they've got a fantastic selection of organic frozen fruit at a very reasonable price!
this is how we've been doing oatmeal for years, and it is absolutely the best way to cool it off! Plus, who can argue with a bunch of nutritional benefits? Great tip.

What a perfect idea! Thanks!
In the state where I live, Blueberries Rule. Grow em, Eat em, Love em! Llama M., I thought you'd get a kick out of hearing that when my daughter came home from college the other weekend, I woke her up with tea and homemade oatmeal and you'd think I'd given the girl a gold brick! She was SO HAPPY. Just shows that some good things are never outgrown :)
marmot mom -- I love it that your daughter appreciates you so much!! Wonderful. I cannot imagine the massive quantities of food I will need to prepare when the noisy boys are grown and home visiting from college...
Oooooh I love the old fashion oatmeal. I eat it every single morning. I usually just take it plain with a little butter and 2 Splendas, but LOVE it with frozen blueberries and strawberries!!

Read this idea to hubby this morning, he eats oatmeal with some kind of fruit everyday, the kind of oatmeal you cook! Great idea!
Grated apples. Now there's an idea I never even considered. Great (no pun intended) idea.
LL -- You will love grated apples in oatmeal. Peel whatever apples you have laying around (either one or two), and grate or cut them into little chunks. Just throw them into the pot while the oatmeal is cooking along with a little cinnamon...
Heaven. Just a touch of brown sugar is all you need, as the apples naturally sweeten the oatmeal. It's like eating apple pie for breakfast.
I've used unsweetened applesauce before, but never thought of grated apple. What a good idea - thanks!
Love your blog. :-)
