I'm lousy. Thanks for asking!

The first time it happened, I was staring at the raw shrimp on sale for $7.99 a pound. Just a few minutes later, it happened again. This time I was handling lemons in the produce department, looking for a slightly tender, juicy one.

“How are you doing today?” the produce guy asks.

“Fine, thanks.” I respond.

“You don’t sound too convincing,” the produce guy continues. “Are you sure you’re doing okay?”

Well, actually I’m not.

But does the produce guy really need to know that? Seriously. Does he moonlight as a therapist, drumming up business all day long in the produce department at the Jewel?

What do you say to this?

-How you doin'?

People often off themselves in the produce section. It is a little known fact. The super market industry has decided to hire mental health professionals to go under cover in an effort to avoid bad publicity. Just FYI.

Thanks, Anon!

Emily -- good to know. ;-)

suzyzin says I really hope that is not true as I often give my little guy an apple to keep him occupied while we shop. yuch and yuch some more.
as I'm reading a "complaint free world" right now I'll refrain from sharing my personal baggage with the produce guys here. Love your blog!!

This is a conundrum, because I'm not sure WHAT I would say, given the scenario, but I also know that as a Starbucks barista, I've been guilty of saying the same sort of thing. We're just trying to be friendly and give everyone a stellar customer experience, and if the only thing we can find to talk to you about is your tone of voice, well then, we'll go there. ;)

But . . . I'm sorry you weren't doing so well. Hope stuff's better.

Hey Suzy!! Sounds like a great book! We sure do miss you guys...

Jenn -- Yeah, I figured as much. And, since you asked, I'm doing just fine. Of course! ;-)

...I say, you need another vacation, sister!
Geez, Llama!! Maybe the guy was sincerely concerned for you. Or, maybe he was trying to drum up some positive waves so he could meet his cataloupe quota for the day... Be that as it may, I think he was just trying to be f-r-i-e-n-d-l-y.
(By the way, how ARE you doing today--you don't sound too good...:)))))

marmot mom -- You're probably right, but still.

Kelsey -- thanks!

I usually say..
"I'm okay."
instead of "fine, thanks." et. al.

Or I even say...."kinda crazy." (which is true!!)

I'm honest, but don't give details.
Make sense?

Hope you are doing better, LM.

I've been known to say "I'm hangin' in there..." which usually gets a response along the lines of "Well that's better than the alternative!" It's honest, but not needy...

Or at least I hope it is!

I always tell them. They asked for it!

andrea -- I like that. I could do that.

Frazzmom -- we would want to seem too needy now would we? ;-)

Suzie -- well, that's another way to approach it!

First time here: I suppose you've been asked this a million times...have you read the children books by Anne Dewdney called Llama Llama Red Pajama and Llama Llama Mad At Mama?

I cracked up when I saw your bloggy moniker over at Rocks In My Dryer. Just stopped by to see if you were a Llama Llama aficionado like my two little ones here! LOL

One other thing...since we are Dave Ramsey fans around here, we always answer as he does: "better than I deserve!" LOL

Depending upon how cranky you are, you could say "WHAT'S IT TO YA?"

or, you could just offer a smile and say "Thanks for asking."

I've done both.

Beth -- why yes, I HAVE read the Llama books. We enjoy them. My favorite is Llama Llama Mad at Mama.

Antique Mommy -- I like that. :-)

In a world full of "fine," "good," and "okay" answers and nobody who really seems to care for the real truth, I'm thankful for your produce guy. Perhaps he's making a difference in your community, one earful at a time.

i get that from time to time - apparently even when i'm feeling pretty content i have been known to sport a pretty furious face. mostly it's old men saying "why the long face?" or - my fav - "oh, things aren't so bad, are they?" unbelievable. hope things are looking up for you today, anyway.
