what a mess

Last night for family fun, I brought out this funny face rice crispy treats kit. It really looks like fun, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not. It’s a lie. (I think these people are in on the floam conspiracy.) The noisy boys were good sports about it, but the whole project was such a mess. To start with, I was irritated that I had to use a pan. I mean, if I wanted to melt marshmallows and get a pan dirty, I would have planned to make ordinary rice crispy treats. But these were no ordinary treats—and no ordinary marshmallows. The marshmallow goop had to be heated and then mixed with the cereal. The problem? The marshmallow-cereal mixture didn’t stick together. And even if it had, the mixture itself tasted nasty. The noisy boys even tried mixing frosting into the stuff to see if they could get it to stick. No luck. In the end they decided to just play with it and pretend it was moon sand, which they’ve seen on T.V. and really, really want.

So after cleaning up our failed attempt at family fun, we turned on some music. Dancing quickly turned into wrestling, which turned into simply whaling on each other while singing along with the music. “I’ve got the love of Jesus, love of Jesus, down in my heart…” WHAM!

Good times.

I can see how you got taken in by the kit. The family in the pictures looks like they're having tons of fun (of course, did you notice there's only a dad - no mom? Maybe that's the first clue there, huh).

I think you get kudos for the attempt at family fun, after all, how were you to know it would be such a dud! And now I know what not to plan for our weekend. Any other ideas?

Let's see...family fun for the Musing Family...if the rain holds off, it might be a good kite flying weekend!

However you spend it...enjoy!

I think you have expressed a great truth... fun doesn't come in a kit... it comes, rather, in the dance of relationship (which can be found most simply in every day opportunities where we wrestle, tug, tease, sing, play, and smile heart to heart.)

LL -- the fact that you can find a great truth in this silly, messy story is amazing. Craver's right -- you ARE Socrates!! (And a blessing to me, and many others!)

LM - I think the faces look kind of gross, to be honest. No wonder it didn't taste good.

Now the wrestle dancing, that sounds like F-U-N.

See? And I was so taken by that kit. It looked like fun in a box!! But I should know better...the best fun does not come in boxes. :-)

yippee! great to hear about somebody else enjoying family dance/wrestling... it's all much more fun than crafting with cereal. And less messy - until somebody falls on the coffee table. :)

mamatoo -- Yes. It never ends well, does it? But it's good, clean fun! Our favorite CD is Jim Gill's "Silly Dance Contest." Now THAT'S fun!!
