it gets better

Today was the Teddy Bear picnic for the noisy boys. Families pack lunches and head over to the school playground to meet other Kindergarten parents. Finally. A Kindergarten event that I can’t screw up! Oh. Unless you’re actually supposed to BRING a teddy bear to this picnic, which you were. And apparently the noisy boys were telling the truth when they said that EVERYONE has a Webkinz except for them. Yup. That about sums it up.

Oh, and I was the only Mom with two name tags. For whatever reason, none of the other twin Moms were there. And on a related topic, it never ceases to amaze me what people will say to me right in front of the kids. My favorites of the day:

They split the boys up? How awful!
Which one is smarter?

Of course, I’m just reporting on all of the negatives. It’s infinitely more interesting than writing about all of the nice parents and children and the fact that we can’t wait to start school next week!

I’d better double check the date and time of the first day. At the rate I’m going, we might miss it!

If you need a good response to "Which one is smarter?". Say "I can never tell them apart" :)

I prefer to go with the shocked, "Are you kidding me? I cannot believe you just asked me that" response. Followed up with a "they're both brilliant!" it seems to do the trick. And hopefully it will spare the next twins they see from such an insensitive question!

It just baffles me that one must say such things out loud.

OH, remind me to tell you how I almost missed #2 son's first day of kindergarten. The whole school process has a way of humbling you/me!! Consider yourself warned!!

What a life! In some ways you'll miss it someday, when it's gone. :)

Does sound like some fun in the midst of everything.

Anon -- Of course. Like I haven't been humbled enough, raising these twin boys to five...of course more is coming!

Ted -- At times I am keenly aware that these are quite possibly the very best years of my life. Busy and exhausting, but I wouldn't trade a single day of it away.

Seriously, you were supposed to bring a teddy bear? Why? What if you don't like teddy bears and you wanted to bring a stuffed dog or elephant?

We work so hard to teach our kids to be polite, and then adults have to go and screw it all up sometimes...

The things people say never fail to amaze me. Whatever you do, weigh your words carefully, because chances are this is the group you'll spend the next 12 years with. For what it's worth, I am with Spaghetti Pie, what if you are anti-bear??? We need a little more lattitude here! It would have been great to show up with something really exotic like stuffed warthogs or vampire bats.(I guarantee you are not finding THOSE on the webkins site...)

SP -- It didn't have to be a teddy bear. It could be any stuffed animal. We had nuthin'.

Marmot mom -- Okay, good point. I probably offended with my icy stare and gasp and "I cannot believe you just asked me that." Seriously. The "who's smarter" question really gets under my skin. Maybe I should just answer it politely and then ask, "Oh, and how about you? Which one of your kids do you love the most?" ;-)

LM - I laughed out loud at this. Your posts are great, I feel like I'm reading my own diary sometimes, except with more clever humor. My 2nd little guy starts K-garten Monday. Love the image of the noisy boys.

TJ -- Thank you for your kind words! If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?
